KLB Quality Training and Consulting LLC, is solely owned and operated by Kiel L Brown.

 

We are a training and consulting company that is focused on training the customer’s employees in the usage of core quality tools. We also help the customer root cause and correct hard to resolve quality issues. We believe in utilizing the right quality tool at the right time and getting down and dirty on the shop floor where the problem exists while working hand in hand with the employees.

 

Kiel L Brown has over 35 years of experience in the automobile industry in problem resolution and problem prevention. He has worked as a Design Engineer taking automobile components from the initial concept through the design and development phase all the way to production, even receiving a US Government patent. As a Quality Engineer he has spent time working in a machining plant as a Statistical Process Control Coordinator (SPC), he has trained over 200 people in SPC and various Quality Core Tools while working hand in hand with production workers on the floor. Additionally, he worked as a warranty and reliability specialist working with major suppliers on the root cause analysis of component failures. Lastly, he was a vehicle quality leader for a major vehicle at an OEM, taking the initial launch problems of the vehicle from almost 300 Conditions per 1000 down to 95 in under 3 years by holding weekly quality meetings with vehicle teams and pushing for resolution.

 

He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters’ Degree in Applied Statistics, is a Certified Quality Engineer through ASQ, a Certified Shainen Greenbelt, a Certified DFSS Green Belt, and a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan (2000-2010) and holds a US Government Patent.

SITUATION:

Company A was having an issue with throughput of a drive plate and gear assembly due to excessive balance rejects. This was causing excessive scrap, rework and overtime. Air Freight shipments to the engine assembly plant were required weekly.

TASKS/GOALS:

The Goal given to the Quality improvement team for the project was to improve throughput, thus eliminating the need for Overtime and excess shipping costs by implementing SPC on the line.

ACTIONS/ACTIVITIES:

  • A thorough study of the ring gear ID was done (after coiling and cutting) using PI tape due to the excessive out of roundness of the gear. This showed the first and last rings of the coil were larger than the inner 4.

  • The 1st and last rings were then separated from the inner 4 for processing.

  • A second sizing die was created for sizing the 1st and last rings.

  • A gage was created to measure the inner circumference just as the PI tape. This gage used a R/Y/G chart to help operator know when to adjust diameter.

RESULTS:

  • Assembly required less weights to balance, improving throughput.

  • Airfreighting costs eliminated saving $60K per year.

  • Overtime reduced and rarely required.

  • Skilled tradesman designed special gage for Operator to measure inner diameter. He now controls the diameter daily and takes pride in his work.
